New Trend: Broadway Shows in the Movie Theater!

The latest trend to hit movies theaters are Broadway Shows! Within the past year, Broadway shows have been live recording their shows to air as special events in theaters. This is great for people who don’t have the chance to see Broadway shows. There are usually three to four airings of each show at Fathom Event movie theaters. Here is a look at some of the shows which have aired so far!

Most recently, the Broadway hit Disney’s Newsies aired in theaters! The special events aired on February 16th, 18th, and 22nd. The show is about the Newsboy Strike 1899, and Newsboy Jack Kelly and the other Newsies taking action! Newsies opened on Broadway on March 29, 2012 and closed on August 24th, 2014. The show won two Tony Awards for 2012 Score and 2012 Choreographer. In 1992, Newsies came out as a movie musical starring Christian Bale as Jack Kelly.

Prior to the live show, the cast rehearsed for months. For the live taping, they had a special one-night performance of Newsies at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles. Fans lined up for hours to just get in to see the show!

The special movie event cast included both Broadway original and National Tour cast members such as Jeremy Jordan (Jack Kelly), Kara Lindsay (Katherine), and Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Crutchie). The movie lasted 2 and a half hours with a 15-minute intermission.

I actually went to see this movie event and I have to say, it was fantastic! The audience go immersed into the show and time period of Newsies. The choreography was nothing I have seen before and the singing, WOW! I was left completely speechless! Jeremy Jordan is a natural who is worth seeing perform live. For the movie, they even made a new song for Crutchie to sing when he is in the refuge. With the record-breaking success of Newsies in movie theaters, they have added a showing on March 4th! For just the three days, it earned $3 million!
